All the world's a stage
But when you're standing there, without a script,
Sometimes the stage fright sets in
You find yourself dry and hot in the spotlight, wishing for just sip of peace
Your feet aren't sure whether to stay still or to dance
The eyes wander around and widen like a deer in headlights
Your breathing quickens and you manage a note
Soon a small tune creaks out, gaining confidence and volume
To crescendo into a bold, sweeping melody
And heads snap
Suddenly eyes are flashing in the darkness staring at you
Laughs dance in the audience
Curses and sympathetic whispers sweep across the stage
Suddenly, in the near silent moment, you realise the absence of the melody
A rich, full note stops abruptly in shock
Hanging in the air, the two sounds duel for attention
And the audience is still watching you
Words creak out again, attempting to blend in with the melody
Slowly, it build into a beautidul duet and hands begin to clap
Smiles break out, like the pearls the watchers wear
Turning your head, you can see the real spotlight shining down
On a beautiful singer, twice as good in their early stages as you could ever be
The realization creeps in and the urge to dive grows
A jump from the balcony could end it all
You'd never preform again
Moving towards the staircase, you continue in your awkard harmony,
Smooth and graceful, for once, the steps are silent
And, as you begin to lean in for the fall,
The lights go out
Applause is every where
You bow and slowly realize
That you never had a mic
It was never you they cared about
The drop reaches up and grabs you, sucking you into the darkness
The roar of applauses drowns out the sound of the thud against the ground
Feet move over you on their way to praise the real stars
In the morning some-one else will have your part, silent and still
Standing in the background
Without a script
In the echoes of the spotlight
Learning how to live
